TRAINING PROGRAM
The Divisions of Endocrinology
in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical
Center in a three year research track provides training for MDs or PhDs
seeking to develop essential investigative skills in both basic and clinical
research to allow for future development of an independent academic career.
For that purpose the Divisions have jointly held an NIH training grant for
post-doctoral fellows continuously for over 30 years. The City of Hope National Medical Center, a highly acclaimed specialty hospital was added as a major training site in 2003. Many of the
graduates of our training program have gone on to develop gratifying, successful careers as
independent investigators around the globe. M.D trainees in this track are provided
ample clinical experience to be highly competent clinical endocrinologists.
A second track designed for MDs not contemplating an academic career in
endocrinology provides excellent clinical training at the University
affiliated county hospital. The ACGME requires that training in this track
includes involvement in research; however the scope of the involvement is
commonly more clinical in nature and is limited to two years. Both
tracks provide exposure to a broad diversity of patient material which meets
board requirements. Clinical exposure to all endocrine disciplines,
including gynecologic reproductive, adolescent and pediatric endocrinology,
is provided. Endocrine and Diabetes Clinics, Thyroid Aspiration
Clinic, Pituitary Tumor Clinic and Diabetic Eye Clinic are held at regular
intervals. Clinical endocrine conferences, basic science
seminars and multiple research conferences are scheduled weekly. |
