CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN MEN'S HEALTH

- Multi-disciplinary Center with a faculty of basic scientists, pharmacologists, clinical investigators, psychologists, nutritionists, and biostatistician from Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Pharmacology

- Grant support from national and international governmental agencies, non-governmental foundations and industry

- Basic research on germ cell regulation, genetics of male infertility, pharmacologic interference of spermatogenesis, nitric oxide and penile disorders, mechanisms of reproductive aging, and animal models of genetic diseases

- Cutting edge technology: microarray analysis, yeast hybrid systems, confocal microscopy, molecular genetics, stable isotope measurement by high resolution mass spectroscopy, high resolution brain, prostate, and bone imaging, etc

- Clinical research on androgen metabolism, androgen replacement in hypogonadal men, and androgen deficient older men, male contraceptive development studies, effects of environmental, pharmaceutical and chemical toxicants on sperm production and function in men, brain structure and function studies in patients with sex chromosome disorders, and androgen effects on Alzheimer’s Disease and multiple sclerosis.

a) The UCLA World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center in Human Reproduction is located in the Martin Research Building and provides support for Contraceptive Development. Collaborating Centers participate in multi-center trials and basic approaches to male contraception. Dr. Wang serves as the Chair of the Male Task Force of the World Health Organization effort on male contraception.

b) The Harbor-UCLA Mellon Foundation Reproductive Biology Center provides support for young investigators, trainees, twinning grants with investigators in developing countries, and pilot studies intended to enhance the development of new approaches to male contraception and reproductive health.

c) NIH, NICHD Contraceptive Clinical Trials Center at Harbor-UCLA is one of two NIH supported Centers of Excellence to identify and test new candidates for male contraception.
